چکیده

Scaling in long term data sets of geomagnetic indices and solar wind ǫ as seen by WIND spacecraft. We study scaling in fluctuations of the geomagnetic indices (AE, AU , and AL) that provide a measure of magnetospheric activity and of the ǫ parameter which is a measure of the solar wind driver. Generalized structure function (GSF) analysis shows that fluctuations exhibit self-similar scaling up to about 1 hour for the AU index and about 2 hours for AL, AE and ǫ when the most extreme fluctuations over 10 standard deviations are excluded. The scaling exponents of the GSF are found to be similar for the three AE indices, and to differ significantly from that of ǫ. This is corroborated by direct comparison of their rescaled probability density functions.

Scaling of solar wind ǫ and the AU , AL and AE indices as seen by WIND

Scaling of solar wind ǫ and the AU, AL and AE indices as seen by WIND. Abstract. We apply the finite size scaling technique to quantify the statistical properties of fluctuations in AU, AL and AE indices and in the ǫ parameter that represents energy input from the solar wind into the magnetosphere. We find that the exponents needed to rescale the probability density functions (PDF) of the fluct...

Solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field features before magnetic storm onset

The presented results, concerning the features of the solar wind plasma structure as observed by spacecraft upstream of Earth, could be used for development of middle-term forecasts of magnetic storms. We have analyzed 1-hour data for 1995-2005 and a whole year of 1-min data during solar minimum (1995) and during solar maximum (2000) with 48 and 60 storms, respectively. The long-term statistica...

Gap filling of solar wind data by singular spectrum analysis

[1] Observational data sets in space physics often contain instrumental and sampling errors, as well as large gaps. This is both an obstacle and an incentive for research, since continuous data sets are typically needed for model formulation and validation. For example, the latest global empirical models of Earth’s magnetic field are crucial for many space weather applications, and require time...

Long-term Geomagnetic Indices and their Use in Inferring Solar Wind Parameters in the Past

We discuss three new geomagnetic indices [the Inter-Hour Variability (IHV), Svalgaard and Cliver (2007); the Inter-Diurnal Variability (IDV), Svalgaard and Cliver, 2005; and the Polar-Cap Potential (PCP) Index, Le Sager and Svalgaard (2004)], that are derivable from data available for a century or more. Each of these indices responds directly to either the solar wind magnetic field strength (B)...
